San Jose losing SAP Open tennis tournament after 2013
San Jose's SAP Open, one of just two indoor tennis tournaments in the United States, will be held for the final time next February, the Association of Tennis Professionals announced Monday.
Declining attendance in San Jose and the presence of just one court at HP Pavilion ultimately were the deciding factors in the ATP board of directors decision to terminate the country's second oldest men's tournament.
Sharks Sports & Entertainment, which owns the San Jose tournament that originated in Monterey in 1889, will try to find ways to bring men's tennis back to the Bay Area by holding exhibition matches, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Meanwhile, to make up for the loss of the tour stop in San Jose, the ATP will launch a new tournament in Rio de Janeiro in 2014.
With the SAP Open off the HP Pavilion schedule after 2013, the San Jose Sharks will no longer have to endure a two-week road trip each February to accommodate the tennis tournament.
